Does divorce occur if the wife jokingly says to her husband, "You are divorced," given a prior pledge from the Shaykh that the divorce formula is "I have chosen myself" or "I have divorced myself from you"?

Divorce does not occur with such wording according to some scholars. Ibn Abbas narrated that a woman said to her husband, "You are divorce," whereupon Ibn Abbas said, "May Allah thwart her; why did she not say, 'I am divorced'?"

One should be cautious about joking in matters of divorce, as this issue is a subject of disagreement. Some scholars have held that divorce occurs when a woman says to her husband, "You are divorced," just as it occurs when she says, "I am divorced from you."
