What is the ruling on the prostration of gratitude (sujood ash-shukr) performed communally, with a pre-determined time and place for it, and each individual performing the prostration in a different direction despite everyone knowing the correct Qiblah?

Prostration of thankfulness (sujud al-shukr) is a Sunnah upon the renewal of a blessing or the removal of an affliction, whether specific or general. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prostrated in thankfulness to Allah when a joyous matter occurred. There is no harm for one or more individuals to prostrate in thankfulness if a blessing encompasses them, whenever the cause arises, but without prior agreement or arrangement. Collective prostration agreed upon in terms of time and place is an innovation (bid'ah). Purity, covering the 'awrah, or facing the qiblah are not conditions for the prostration of thankfulness.
