What is the ruling on eating hyena meat? With mention of the evidence?

Scholars differed regarding the ruling on eating hyena, holding two opinions:

1. Prohibition: This is the view of the Hanafis, and their evidence is the hadith prohibiting the consumption of any carnivorous animal with fangs.

2. Permissibility and Lawfulness: This is the view of the majority of scholars. They cited the hadith of Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted eating hyena. They responded to the hadiths of prohibition by specifying hyena as an exception through Jabir's hadith, or by arguing that hyena is not among the ordinary beasts of prey covered by the prohibition. This is the view chosen by the Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas.
