Must a bottle that fell and broke without its owner's knowledge be repaired?

Lack of intent does not negate liability for the broken bottle if its use was not authorized. Damage, whether intentional or accidental, necessitates compensation. If the break does not affect its intended purpose, the bottle is returned to its owner and the value of the damage is paid. However, if the break renders it unusable for its purpose, then the full value is due, and the questioner may keep the bottle. Its owner must be informed of this.
