Is it permissible to swear upon the Qur'an to quit a specific type of smoking, knowing that the wife is the one who requested it?

1. Smoking is forbidden due to the severe harm it causes, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There shall be no harm or reciprocating of harm."

2. If you swore not to smoke and intended a specific type of it, your oath is restricted to that type, and you do not break your oath by smoking another type. For intention is beneficial in an oath, specifying the general and restricting the absolute.

3. If the oath was sworn before someone authorized to administer oaths, such as a judge, or if the person was an oppressor, then the intention is of no benefit to him. Rather, the oath in such a case is based on the intention of the one administering the oath.

4. The wife does not have the authority to administer an oath, and in this case, your intention and interpretation are beneficial to you, because you are neither an oppressor nor oppressed.

5. One should not swear an oath regarding such matters, even with an interpretation. Rather, what is obligatory upon you is to abandon smoking out of obedience to Allah Almighty and to flee from His wrath.
