Is working in the army band unlawful (haram) because of the music?

Music is forbidden to play and listen to. Many proofs indicate this, among them the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There will be people from my Ummah who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, wine, and musical instruments as lawful." The term "musical instruments" refers to instruments of amusement that are played, and this text includes all musical instruments.

Some contemporary scholars have made an exception for military music, but this exception is invalid for several reasons:

1. It is a specification of the hadiths of prohibition without a specific qualifier, other than mere opinion and preference. 2. Muslims are required, in times of war, to turn their hearts to their Lord and remember Allah frequently, as stated in His saying: "O you who have believed, when you encounter a [strong] force, be firm and remember Allah much that you may succeed." (Al-Anfal/45). The use of music corrupts this and distracts them from the remembrance of Allah. 3. Its use is a custom of disbelievers, and it is not permissible to imitate them, especially in matters that Allah has generally forbidden, such as music.
