There are two causes for major ritual impurity (janaba): sexual intercourse, with or without the emission of semen, and the emission of semen, whether due to a wet dream or otherwise. Ghusl (ritual bath) becomes obligatory if a woman sees semen after a wet dream. The age of puberty (ihtilam) considered is nine lunar years and above. Not every fluid discharged from a woman's private parts is semen; it could be pre-seminal fluid (madhiy) or discharge. Ghusl is obligatory upon seeing semen, while ablution (wudu) is required upon seeing pre-seminal fluid, and there is a detailed ruling for discharges. 'Ghusl' (with a Dammah on the Ghayn) is the name for the act of ritual bathing. Ghusl has two forms: a complete form (mentioning Allah's name, intention, washing the hands, washing the private parts, performing ablution, running water through the hair, pouring water over the body, and washing the feet) and a sufficient form (intention, pouring water over the apparent skin and hair).
