What should one do who has tasted the sweetness of faith then lost it, so that he no longer tastes the sweetness of tasbeeh (glorification of God) and istighfar (seeking forgiveness), nor does he feel humility in his prayer, nor does he fear backbiting, nor does he enjoin good, nor forbid evil, and his life has become miserable, and his remembrance of Allah has diminished, and his good opinion of his Lord has lessened, and the light has departed from his face?
What has afflicted a person in terms of being veiled from Allah and losing intimacy with Him stems from disobedience. He must therefore engage in sincere repentance to remove the rust of sins and restore the sweetness of faith, for sins bequeath a loneliness in the heart that no worldly pleasure can counterbalance.
Therefore, this person must offer sincere repentance and draw closer to his Lord, for whoever draws near to Him a handspan, Allah draws near to him an arm’s length. He must strive against himself to regain obedience, soundness of heart, and well-being. He should know that the sweetness of obedience is only attained through patience and struggle, and that lethargy does not exempt him from an obligation nor lead him into what is forbidden.
Furthermore, he should frequently contemplate Allah's Names, Attributes, and blessings, respond to His commands, and avoid His prohibitions. He should also read the Quran with deliberation and understanding, for it is the life of hearts and a healing for what is in the chests.
Finally, he should frequently supplicate to Allah and implore Him to keep his heart firm on the truth and let him taste the sweetness of faith and the pleasure of obedience.
