The question

How did the eminent scholar Al-Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) come to know that the descriptive attributes (sifāt khabariyyah) such as "the Hand, the Face, the Fingers, the Foot, and the Shin" are impossible for Allah to be mere body parts or components, despite the rejection of rational proofs and the absence of any evidence for this from the Qur’an or Sunnah?

The answer

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen's statement aligns with the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah (People of the Sunnah and the Community) in that the terms "some" (البعض) and "part" (الجزء) are ambiguous phrases that could imply a false meaning (the separation of attributes from Allah). The method of the Salaf (pious predecessors) is not to use these terms, neither in affirmation nor in negation. Instead, they negate false meanings and affirm correct meanings. Thus, Allah's descriptive attributes, such as the Hand, Face, and Eye, are not parts or portions of Him. We do not say that He is indivisible or without parts, because this has not been reported. Proper reverence for Allah necessitates refraining from what has not been revealed. Allah must be declared free from all imperfections. Rational proof is acceptable concerning Allah based on qiyas al-awla (analogy of the more appropriate), not based on qiyas al-tamthil (analogy of resemblance) or qiyas al-shumul (analogy of encompassment). For Allah belongs the highest example, and Allah is more deserving of every perfection affirmed for creation.
