Abu Jahl is a kunya (agnomen) for Amr ibn Hisham, bestowed upon him by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after he had been known as Abu al-Hakam. Ibn al-Qayyim said: "And likewise, his kunya for Abu al-Hakam as Abu Jahl is an agnomen that matches his description and meaning, and he is the most deserving of creation of this kunya."
