Is a husband considered a martyr if he is killed by an American soldier, while he was not punctual in prayer and sometimes consumed intoxicants? And is it permissible for a working wife to observe the 'iddah (waiting period) while continuing her work to support her children?

Prayer is the greatest pillar of the religion after the two Shahadas, and a severe warning has been issued for those who abandon it. Scholars have differed on the ruling concerning one who abandons prayer out of laziness: Is he a disbeliever or a Muslim?

The first opinion: He is a disbeliever.

The second opinion: He is not a disbeliever, but rather a transgressor who has committed a major sin. This is the view of the majority of jurists. They cite as evidence hadiths indicating the salvation from Hellfire for anyone who says "There is no god but Allah," and that Muslims did not treat one who abandoned prayer as a disbeliever, such as praying over him and burying him in Muslim cemeteries. As for the hadiths that indicate the disbelief of one who abandons prayer, they are interpreted as a form of strong admonishment and a resemblance to disbelievers, not as a literal declaration of disbelief.
