The answer

Spouses must strive for the stability of married life due to the legitimate purposes this serves and for the sound upbringing of children. It is not permissible for a woman to seek divorce without a legitimate reason. The wording issued by the husband can be interpreted in two ways: either it is a conditional divorce that takes effect immediately upon the wife's request, or it is merely an oath of divorce if she requests it. In the latter case, he can choose not to act on his oath and expiate it by feeding ten poor persons, clothing them, or freeing a slave, or by fasting for three days if he cannot find these means. It is advisable to avoid words of divorce and prohibition and to act according to the Prophet's guidance (peace be upon him) regarding breaking an oath and expiating it if something else is better than it.
