It is not initially obligatory for you to ascertain the truth of the dispute between your parents. However, if you intervene between them, it is obligatory for you to speak with knowledge and fairness. It is not permissible to favor one parent over the other. You are not obligated to obey your father in severing ties of kinship with your mother's side; rather, you must maintain kinship ties even if they mistreat you. In such a case, you should advise them, enjoin good upon them, and forbid evil from them. As for your father's anger, if it is justified, then you are in great danger. If it is without justification, it will not harm you. You must be dutiful to your parents and treat them kindly. This includes advising them gently and respectfully, and clarifying that spying is forbidden except in specific cases. You should strive to reconcile between your parents and between your father and your mother's family, for reconciling disputes is among the deeds most beloved to Allah.
