Whoever intentionally breaks their fast during Ramadan by engaging in intercourse must perform sincere repentance. Intentionally breaking the fast is one of the gravest sins. In addition to repentance, they must offer expiation for every day they engaged in intercourse, amounting to seven expiations. The expiation for intercourse is, in order: freeing a slave; if unable, then fasting for two consecutive months; if unable, then feeding sixty poor people. They must also make up for these days that they corrupted by intercourse. His wife is also subject to the same sincere repentance and making up those days if she was compliant. Regarding the obligation of expiation upon her, there is a difference of opinion among scholars, and the view of its obligation is the position of the majority.
