Is it obligatory to fast for four months for someone who had intercourse with his wife during the daytime in Ramadan, and then had intercourse with her again after learning about the expiation?

If a fasting person engages in sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan, knowing its prohibition, then the major expiation (kaffarah kubra) is incumbent upon him, whether he knew of its obligation or not. However, if he was ignorant of the prohibition of sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan, an ignorance for which he is excused, then there is no expiation upon him, like someone who grew up far from Muslim lands or is a recent convert to Islam. But if he grew up in Muslim lands, his ignorance is not excused. The make-up (qada') of every day in which intercourse occurred is obligatory, regardless of the expiation being due. If intercourse is repeated in one day, then one expiation is required along with the make-up. But if it is repeated on different days, then each day has its own expiation.
