If a man has intercourse with his wife more than once on separate days during Ramadan, is he required to fast for two months for each day, or is one expiation sufficient for all days? What is the ruling if he was unaware of the necessity of expiation and believed that merely making up the day was sufficient? Is expiation obligatory for the wife as it is for the husband? Is it permissible to pay the value of feeding in cash or to feed one needy person on behalf of himself and his wife? Is it permissible to pay it to charitable organizations if he cannot find someone to feed?

Expiation (kaffarah) is obligatory for whoever has intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan. The expiation multiplies with the number of days, not with the number of times intercourse occurs within a single day. Expiation becomes obligatory with intercourse even if one is unaware of its obligation. Expiation is obligatory for the wife if she is willing; however, if she is coerced, nothing is due from her. It is not permissible to pay the expiation in money. It is permissible to feed one indigent person half a sa' for the man and half a sa' for his wife, and this is considered one indigent person out of the sixty. It is not permissible to give it to a single indigent person, nor to charitable organizations that might not distribute it to sixty indigent persons.
