Will fasting on Thursday, breaking the fast on Friday, breaking the fast on Sunday, and fasting on Monday spare me embarrassment on Saturday and regarding what was mentioned concerning it? And will I receive the reward for the fast of Solomon in this manner?

The hadith prohibiting fasting on Saturday was weakened by some imams, such as Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad, while others interpreted the prohibition mentioned therein as a matter of dislike (karahah). This dislike is removed by fasting a day before or a day after it, or if there is a preponderant benefit in doing so. Thus, for someone who fasts alternate days (the fast of David), there is no harm in singling out Saturday for fasting. As for someone who does not follow this pattern of fasting, singling out Saturday for fasting is disliked according to those who authenticate the hadith, and not disliked according to those who weaken it. The safer approach is not to single out Saturday for fasting unless there is a preponderant benefit, such as if it coincides with the Day of Arafah or Ashura, or if one is observing the fast of David (peace be upon him).
