What is the ruling on replacing the dice in children's board games with a random number generator or numbered paper slips from which one is randomly selected, taking into account not to miss prayers or waste time?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade playing with dice, and Ibn Abd al-Barr reported the consensus of scholars on its prohibition. This prohibition is related to the essence of playing with it, whether the die itself is removed and replaced with paper or another instrument, as long as the true nature of the game remains. The prohibition does not cease, because Sharia rulings are concerned with meanings, not merely with the names or outward appearances of things. The ruling for a thing is the same as the ruling for its like, so it is not permissible for a Muslim to replace dice with something that is similar in meaning and essence, differing only in outward form.
