Is it permissible to slaughter a single animal with the intention of both ʾaḍḥiyah and ʿaqīqah?

The jurists differed on whether the Udhiyah (sacrifice) suffices for the Aqiqah (sacrifice for a newborn) into two opinions:

1. First Opinion: The Udhiyah does not suffice for the Aqiqah. This is the madhhab (school of thought) of the Malikis and Shafi'is, and one narration from Imam Ahmad. Their argument is that each of them is an act of worship intended for itself, and each has a different reason, so one does not suffice for the other. 2. Second Opinion: The Udhiyah suffices for the Aqiqah. This is one narration from Imam Ahmad and the madhhab of the Hanafis. It was also stated by Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Muhammad ibn Sirin, and Qatadah. Their argument is that the purpose of both is to draw closer to Allah through slaughtering, so one can encompass the other. Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim preferred this opinion.
