Is it permissible to pray in congregation with a group whose members fight amongst themselves, and whose Imam usurps lands?

It is not permissible to abandon prayer with the villagers, whether individually or in congregation, if the Imam is a transgressor (fasiq) or an innovator (mubtadi'); because his prayer is valid in itself, and because the Imams have differed on this matter, unless there is another Imam who is more righteous in his faith. Therefore, Muslims must pray behind a transgressing or innovating Imam, even if he has openly displayed his wickedness. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Imam al-Tahawi in his creed explicitly stated the permissibility of praying behind every righteous and wicked person from the people of the Qiblah. As Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, the Companions prayed behind Imams who were afflicted by trials (maftunin) and transgressors during the time of tribulations. The purpose of this is to preserve the congregation and prevent its disruption.
