Is a father's refusal to marry his daughter to a suitor of good character and religious commitment, on the grounds that the suitor's brother had previously wronged his wife, considered a legitimate Islamic excuse for rejecting this marriage?

Allah legislated guardianship (wilayah) to safeguard the interests of the one being guarded. A father may be hesitant to advise his daughter, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, rejected the proposals of Abu Bakr and Umar for Fatima due to her young age. Fatima bint Qais was advised to marry Usama because of Muawiya's poverty and Abu al-Jahm's striking habit. These are all matters considered in Islamic law, in addition to character and religiosity. Our advice to the father is to prioritize the command of the Prophet ﷺ: if the young man is pleasing in his religiosity and character, he should not prevent his daughter from marrying him. While siblings may sometimes share similar character traits, they also differ significantly. Therefore, the father must verify the character of the suitor himself.
