What is the ruling on the one who commits adultery (zānī)?

Adultery is one of the gravest sins, forbidden by God. It incurs God's wrath and punishment, causes diseases, spreads animosity, leads to crimes, mixes lineages, and destroys chastity. Allah has prescribed severe penalties for it in this world and the hereafter, including doubled torment on the Day of Judgment and eternal humiliation therein for those who do not repent, and torment in the grave as depicted in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) vision. Allah warned against it, saying: "And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it was an immorality and an evil way." (17:32). The punishment for an adulterer in this world is one hundred lashes for the unmarried, along with a year of exile for the man, and stoning to death for the married, equally applicable to both men and women.
