When did the splitting of the moon occur?

The splitting of the moon occurred during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, before the Hijra to Medina. Scholars are unanimous on this, and there are numerous, consecutively transmitted (mutawatir) hadiths that provide conclusive evidence of it. It seems to have taken place between the Isra and Mi'raj and the Year of Sorrow, which is approximately one year before the Hijra.
