What is the interpretation of the clause stating that whoever comes to the Prophet, peace be upon him, from Quraish shall be returned to them, and whoever comes to Quraish from the believers shall be accepted by them?

The clause states that whoever came to the Muslims as a Muslim from Quraysh, the Muslims must return him to Quraysh, and whoever apostatized from Islam and went from the Muslims to Quraysh, Quraysh was not obligated to return him. Al-Bukhari narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, agreed to this condition in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and returned Abu Jandal to his father Suhayl ibn Amr, but he did not return the migrant Muslim women. Scholars justified the exclusion of women due to their tenderness and weakness, and for the sanctity of Islam; as Allah Almighty says: "they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them" [Al-Mumtahanah: 10]. This clause ultimately worked in favor of the Muslims, as none of them apostatized, and whoever from Quraysh embraced Islam and was returned to them became a burden upon them.
