How do I acquire good character traits?
Good character is a fundamental trait in Islam, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, was sent to perfect it; it is a key to entering Paradise. There are four ways to treat the soul's flaws and acquire virtuous character: learning from an insightful shaykh, seeking advice from a sincere friend, benefiting from the criticism of enemies, and interacting with people and observing their flaws. Good character is composed of a balance of four forces: knowledge, anger, desire, and justice between them. These morals can be acquired through striving (mujahadah) and compelling the soul to perform the actions required by the desired character, such as accustoming oneself to generosity and humility. The process of refining the soul is akin to treating the body, as both require care, nourishment, and striving, and the treatment of illnesses (vices) is through their opposites. The most important aspect of striving is fulfilling one's resolve and patiently forsaking desires, and disciplining the soul when it falters.
