Is breaking the fast by young men during a four-hour military march, which brought them close to perishing, a sharia error, and what is the solution if that is the case?
It is permissible to break the fast in for one who intends to meet the enemy and gain strength by breaking the fast to fight them, and it may even be obligatory, as happened in the Conquest of Mecca (Ghazwat al-Fath). However, if the training can be postponed, or if it is not preparation for an imminent confrontation with the enemy, then breaking the fast is not permissible. If it is highly probable that a fasting person can continue fasting, but then it becomes too difficult for him to the point of fearing perishment, then he must break his fast only to the extent that removes the fear of perishment, then he should abstain from eating until sunset and make up that day.
