The question

What should I do, as I have sworn not to reply to my friend, and I invoked paralysis upon my hand if I were to reply to her, and she is now in need of me, and I wish to restore our friendship?

The answer

The agreed-upon Hadith: "By Allah—if Allah wills—I will not swear an oath and then see something better than it without atoning for my oath and doing that which is better," indicates that an oath should not be an impediment to doing good. In such a case, one should break the oath and atone for it. It is advisable to atone for the oath, respond to your friend, and help her in ways that involve no sin. By doing so, in obedience to the command of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, it is hoped that your prayer against yourself will not be answered. Love and harmony should prevail among Muslims, and enmity and discord should be avoided, leaving no room for Satan to incite strife between them.
