What is the ruling regarding someone who swore an oath to his mother that he would not forget her for a single minute, seeking to appease her?

There is no blame upon someone who swears such an oath as an exaggeration and affirmation, intending to please his mother, and he is not considered a perjurer. This is because such expressions commonly occur on people's tongues as a form of exaggeration regarding a certain matter, and their literal meaning is not intended. Exaggeration has been mentioned in Islamic texts, such as the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Hajj is Arafah," and his saying: "Religion is sincerity (or counsel)." And Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) statement regarding those who withheld zakat (definition): "By Allah, if they withhold a rope [or a tether] that they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I would fight them over its withholding."
