Is it obligatory to leave a scholarly lecture to answer one's mother, or is it better to continue sitting to benefit from the lecture?

Filial piety is obligatory and takes precedence over supererogatory acts of worship. Responding to one's mother is obligatory, even if you are listening to a lecture or in a study circle, because drawing near to Allah through obligatory deeds is more beloved to Him and carries a greater reward.
