Does seeking forgiveness—no matter how much—guarantee that the one seeking it will see good things, and does not seeing them necessitate abandoning seeking forgiveness?
Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) is one of the best forms of remembrance (dhikr) after declaring monotheism (Tawhid). Allah Almighty has commanded it and promised those who seek forgiveness mercy, a good life, and abundant blessings, as He says: {So know that there is no god but Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women} [Quran 47:19], and His saying: {And [say], "And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term"} [Quran 11:3]. It has been narrated from the Prophets and the righteous predecessors that they frequently sought forgiveness and encouraged it. The remedy for sins is seeking forgiveness. Even if a servant does not perceive the effect or reward of seeking forgiveness, they should not abandon this act of obedience, because the effect might be present even if the person does not notice it. The reason for the absence of a perceived effect might be a weak conviction in the supplication. Therefore, one should persevere in seeking forgiveness with a present heart and a strong awareness of their sin.
