Is it permissible to seek forgiveness for a sin without repentance, remorse, or the intention to abandon it?

Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) is a great act of worship that brings abundant good in this world and the Hereafter, as stated in the Holy Quran and the Prophet's Sunnah. However, its fruits are only reaped by those who fulfill its conditions: abandoning the sin, regretting it, and resolving not to return to it. Otherwise, it would be like mocking one's Lord. Repentance is obligatory immediately, by the consensus of jurists, and delaying it is an added sin. The one who persists in sin must fear Allah's wrath and punishment, and know that whoever abandons forbidden acts, Allah will compensate him with something better, for "indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good."
