The question

If the 'Arsh (Throne) is the ceiling of all creation, and nothing created can be above it, then how can the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfūz) be above the 'Arsh, knowing that it is created? And how do we explain the Hadith: "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, wrote a book with Him, above the 'Arsh"?

The answer

The Throne is the ceiling of creation. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the distances between the heavens, the Throne, and the Water, and that the Throne is upon the Water and Allah is above the Throne. This does not prevent something from being placed upon it, such as the book mentioned by the Prophet (peace be upon him): «When Allah completed the creation, He wrote with Him, above His Throne: 'Indeed, My mercy has preceded My wrath'», whether this book was the Preserved Tablet or another book. One should not delve deeply into the details of the unseen except within the limits of what the text has stated and surrender to it, for the modalities of matters of the unseen are veiled from our understanding.
