What is the ruling on food containing tartaric acid of unknown origin?

Tartaric acid is an organic chemical compound that occurs naturally in grapes and other fruits. A large portion of it is extracted as a byproduct of winemaking. It is permissible to use acid that has been extracted naturally, whereas it is forbidden to use that which has been taken from Khamr (wine/intoxicant) due to its impurity and its ability to contaminate whatever it mixes with. If its source is unknown, it is obligatory to avoid it, as the majority of it results from the winemaking process.
