Is it true that when Omar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, embraced Islam and gathered his family and declared his conversion, his son Abdullah ibn Omar told him that he had embraced Islam a year before him, whereupon Omar responded, "Would you be content for your father to enter Hell? By Allah, I will beat you severely"? And is it true that Abdullah ibn Omar used to say, "Many a time I would meet my father, and he would see me and I him, and every time he saw me, he would nudge me and say, 'Allah suffices us, you wanted to make me enter Hell'"?

There is no evidence to support the authenticity of this story. As for the claim that Ibn Umar embraced Islam before his father, it is refuted by meticulous scholars. Indeed, Nafi', the mawla (freed slave) of Ibn Umar, denied it. In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated from him: "People say that Ibn Umar embraced Islam before Umar, but that is not true. Rather, on the Day of al-Hudaybiyah, Umar sent Abdullah to a horse of his... while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking the pledge of allegiance under the tree, and Umar was unaware of that. So Abdullah pledged allegiance, then went to the horse, and brought it to Umar... He informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking the pledge of allegiance under the tree. [Umar] said, 'Go,' so he went with him until he pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is what people refer to when they say that Ibn Umar embraced Islam before Umar." Furthermore, Ibn Umar embraced Islam in Mecca with his father while he was young.
