What is the difference between His saying, the Almighty, in Surat Al-Baqarah: (إِلَيْنَا) (and what was given to the prophets), and His saying in Surat Aal Imran: (عَلَيْنَا) (and the prophets)?
Al-Kirmani said: The Quran mentioned in Surat Al-Baqarah: "and what was revealed to us" (wa ma unzila ilayna) because "ila" (to) indicates the termination of a thing from any direction whatsoever, and the heavenly books terminate at the prophets and their nations collectively. The address in Surat Al-Baqarah is to the nation, as Allah Almighty says: "Say (qulu)" (plural imperative), so "ila" (to) was more appropriate. As for Surat Aal Imran, it mentioned "and what was revealed upon us" (wa ma unzila alayna) because "ala" (upon) specifically refers to the aspect of being from above, which is suitable for the prophets, as the books were revealed upon them, and the nation had no share in that. Furthermore, in Surat Aal Imran, the address is directed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as Allah says: "Say (qul)" (singular imperative), so "alayna" (upon us) was appropriate.
