The term "ihtibas" (retention/confinement) is used by jurists to refer to a wife surrendering herself to her husband, as maintenance (nafaqah) is considered a recompense for this "ihtibas." It is also applied to waqf (endowment), as it prevents the disposal of the endowed property's corpus while allowing its usufruct.
