Is it necessary to mention all sins when repenting from them? And must they be mentioned in prayer? And is repentance to be repeated for all sins, or only for the committed sin when returning to it?

There are two types of repentance: Repentance from a specific sin, by recalling and identifying it, and general repentance, which is superior because it encompasses all sins, known and unknown. Whoever intends general repentance is not required to enumerate their sins; rather, they should intend to repent from all of them and to adhere to the Sharia.

Ibn al-Qayyim stated that hastening to repent is an immediate obligation, and delaying it is a sin that necessitates another repentance. Nothing delivers one from sins except general repentance, because what a person does not know of their sins is more than what they do know, and their ignorance of them does not excuse them if they were able to acquire knowledge.

Just as polytheism (shirk) in this Ummah is more subtle than the creeping of an ant, liberation from it is achieved by supplicating: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating partners with You while I know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know."

If a person returns to a sin they had repented from, they should repent from that sin alone, and the sin of other transgressions they did not return to will not revert to them. A person's repentance from a sin is valid even if they are persistent in another sin.
