What is the ruling on delaying the making up of days from the previous Ramadan for several years due to illness, and is expiation obligatory in this case?

If an illness occurs before Ramadan (definition), at a time sufficient for making up the fast, and you are unable to make it up due to that illness, then no fidyah (definition) (expiatory payment) is obligatory upon you. Rather, you are only required to make up those days once the impediment is removed. However, some scholars hold the view that fidyah is obligatory in addition to making up the fast if it was possible to make up the fast before the illness occurred. Therefore, it is more cautious to pay the fidyah if you are able to do so.
