Sulayman (peace be upon him) was a prophet and a great king who inherited prophethood and kingship from his father, Dawud (peace be upon him). Allah distinguished him by granting him knowledge of the speech of birds and by subjecting to him jinn, humans, birds, wind, and devils. He lived for fifty-two years, and his reign lasted forty years. At his death, his soul was taken while he was leaning on his staff. The jinn continued to work for him for a year, thinking he was alive and praying, until a creature of the earth ate away his staff, and he fell. It then became clear to the jinn that they do not know the unseen.
