What is the ruling on Friday prayer that is performed after the time for Asr prayer has begun or after the Asr athan and before one rak'ah of the Friday prayer is caught? And what is the ruling on the prayers that were performed behind these khatibs? Is the reward of Friday prayer written for those who prayed behind them? Do the khatibs bear the burden of the worshippers in the following cases: being compelled to attend the second Friday prayer, ignorance of the ruling, and negligence in attending the first Friday prayer despite knowing the ruling?
The majority of scholars hold that the last time for Jumu'ah prayer is the entry of the 'Asr prayer time. If the 'Asr time begins, the Jumu'ah prayer is dropped and one prays Dhuhr instead. The Malikis differed on this, making its optional time end with the entry of 'Asr time, and its necessary time for those with excuses extending until sunset. Therefore, it is not permissible to delay the Jumu'ah prayer until the entry of 'Asr time except for those with excuses, following the Maliki school of thought. As for one who intentionally delays it without an excuse until 'Asr time begins, his prayer is valid according to the Malikis, but he incurs a great sin if he was aware of the impermissibility of delaying it.
