Charity to relatives combines both charity and maintaining kinship ties, and it is better than giving charity to a poor stranger. The Sunnah indicates that one who gives charity to his relatives receives two rewards: the reward for kinship and the reward for charity. However, circumstances may necessitate prioritizing strangers over relatives if the former are in essential need of food or medicine, while the relative only needs something non-essential.
