What is the ruling on intoning, echoing, and chanting in Dhikr and Du'a, and are there any proofs for this manner (of performance) during the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his Companions?

Remembrance (dhikr) and supplication (du'a) are acts of worship, and they must be performed according to the Sharia without excess. Exaggerating in melodizing and chanting is disliked even in matters where the Sharia permits beautifying the voice, such as the adhan (call to prayer) and the Quran. The Salaf (early Muslims) disliked excessive melodic embellishment in Quranic recitation, as well as chanting and melodious recitation of dhikr and supplications in mosques if it leads to disturbing those who are praying.
