What is the ruling on continuing to lead a mosque where worshippers collectively engage in dhikr and supplication after the prayer, with the aim of reconciling their hearts and teaching them the correct Sunnah?

You have done well by asking before doing something that could negatively impact the worshippers. Among the greatest qualities of a caller to Allah are knowledge and wisdom, and through them, objectives are achieved. Wisdom does not mean compromising the truth; rather, it is following a path that leads the ignorant and innovators to the shore of knowledge and Sunnah. The wise caller knows that these worshippers refer to imams and scholars they trust for their fatwas. Surprising people with a Sunnah they are unaware of may cause resentment towards the Sunnah and its people, creating barriers, whereas the intention is gradual propagation.

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, in explaining the saying of Ali ibn Abi Talib, "Speak to people in a way they understand," said: This means speak to them in a way their minds can grasp so they are not led astray. "In a way they understand" does not mean what they already know, but rather to prevent them from being led astray. The interrogative "Do you want Allah and His Messenger to be disbelieved?!" is for denunciation, for people do not directly disbelieve Allah and His Messenger, but they disbelieve the conveyor if he tells them something beyond the grasp of their minds.

We do not refrain from speaking about matters beyond people's comprehension, but rather we speak to them in a way their minds can grasp, through gradual steps until they accept the discourse. Similarly, regarding practices from the Sunnah that people are unaccustomed to, we implement them after informing them so their souls may accept them. From this, the importance of wisdom in da'wah (calling to Islam) is understood, and the caller must consider the minds of those being called and treat each person according to their status.

You should adopt the path of wisdom in calling these people to abandon collective dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and other innovations. We recommend the following: 1. Consistently lead congregational prayers and endear yourself to them through your imamate. 2. Do not participate in their dhikr or innovations, but remain in the prayer area to perform the legislated remembrance alone. 3. Give them short daily lessons as a way to eradicate their innovations and teach them. 4. Focus on glorifying the Sunnah and following the evidence, mentioning examples from the Companions, the Tabi'in (successors), and the Imams. 5. Avoid directly addressing their innovations or the imams whose opinions they follow. 6. Pay attention to their leaders and intelligent individuals and exert effort with them. 7. Show them kindness through gifts, such as books and pamphlets, and honor them with food and drink as available. 8. Participate in their permissible occasions and draw close to them with good manners.

This advice is for every caller who desires success in a society where innovations are prevalent. Do not forget to seek Allah's help and be sincere in your call, and keep in mind that these people are ill and need the medicine you possess.
