Do the phrases and expressions repeated by a husband, such as his mention of a man divorcing his wife, or his completion of an actor's line saying: "You are divorced," or his saying to his wife: "You are a divorcee" with the intention of praising her swiftness and activity, constitute a divorce between the spouses? And is the wife obligated to ask her husband about his intention in every word similar to divorce?

A tale of divorce, or any word that implies it, does not constitute a divorce if circumstantial evidence indicates that the husband did not intend it. The wife is not obligated to question her husband about his intention, in order to avoid obsessive thoughts, the cure for which is not to indulge in them, but to seek Allah's help and supplicate. We advise the husband to fear Allah concerning his wife and to be cautious of ambiguous words, especially if his wife is prone to obsessive thoughts, due to the harm and poor companionship this entails, which is prohibited by the Almighty’s saying: "And live with them in kindness."
