What is the ruling on a nursing mother breaking her fast in Ramadan? And what is its expiation?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a woman breaks her fast due to postpartum bleeding (nifas), she must make up those days (qada'). It is not permissible for her to break her fast after becoming pure, except for the excuse of breastfeeding if she fears for herself or her child. In this case, she must make up the days and pay the fidyah of feeding one poor person for each day if she broke her fast out of fear for her child. However, if she broke her fast without a valid excuse, she has sinned and must make up the days along with repentance. If she delays making up the days without a valid excuse until the next Ramadan begins, she must, in addition to making up the days, pay the fidyah of feeding one poor person for each day.
