What is the ruling on breaking my fast in Ramadan due to pregnancy and postpartum bleeding (nifas), and is it obligatory upon me to make up the fasts (qada') and pay expiation (fidyah), or only to make up the fasts?
"If a pregnant woman breaks her fast out of fear for herself, or for herself and the fetus, then she is only obligated to make up the missed days. But if the breaking of the fast is only out of fear for the fetus alone, then she is obligated to make up the missed days along with feeding a poor person for each day. After childbirth, fasting is prohibited during the period of postpartum bleeding, and she is only obligated to make up the missed days. If the bleeding stops during Ramadan, she fasts unless she fears for herself or the newborn, then she breaks the fast and only makes up the missed days. And if the fear is only for the newborn, then she is obligated to make up the missed days and feed a poor person.
