What is the ruling on the Zakat of alfalfa, part of which is used as fodder and part for sale, and its value is thirty thousand Riyals?

Zakat is obligatory on what comes forth from the earth, such as grains and fruits that are measured and stored, like dates and grains. It is not obligatory on vegetables, fruits, and moist plants such as alfalfa.

However, if alfalfa is intended for trade, then the Zakat of trade goods becomes obligatory on it, provided its value reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a hawl (one lunar year) has passed since it was offered for trade. This is done by appraising its value and giving out one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) of its value.

But if it is sold while fresh and does not remain for a full year, then Zakat is obligatory on its price if it reaches the nisab and a hawl has passed while it is in the seller's possession.
