The meaning of the phrase "من تمنطق فقد تزندق" (whoever engages in logic has become a heretic) is that whoever adopts logic in the manner of philosophers concerning matters of the unseen and divine, and believes in its principles and adheres to its implications, then that may lead him to heresy (zandaqah). As for the phrase "من تصوف ولم يتفقه فقد تزندق، ومن تفقه ولم يتصوف فقد تزندق" (whoever practices Sufism without fiqh has become a heretic, and whoever practices fiqh without Sufism has become a heretic), it means the necessity of combining the rectification of the outward by knowing the rulings of religion, and the rectification of the inward by knowing Allah and having certainty. Neglecting either of these may lead to heresy. This last phrase is not known to be preserved from the imams of the religion.
