What is required of the slanderer, and of others who spread the slander, towards the slandered person?

The slanderer must recant his slander before those who heard it, along with feeling remorse, desisting from the act, and resolving never to return to it. He must also seek absolution from the slandered person, unless seeking absolution would lead to a greater harm. It has also been said that it is sufficient for him to supplicate for the slandered person, seek forgiveness for him, and praise him in the gatherings where he slandered him, and that seeking absolution is not obligatory.
