What is the ruling on a father who killed his corrupt son, who was troublesome and disobedient, after many attempts to reform him? And is a father permitted to kill him because he is a harm? And what is the nature of this killing and its punishment?
What the father did to his son is one of the gravest major sins, due to the Almighty's saying: "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment" (Quran 4:93). And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believer will continue to be in a state of leeway regarding his religion as long as he does not shed unlawful blood." The fact that the son was prone to frequent quarrels and sins does not justify killing him. What is required of the father is to enjoin good and forbid evil. As for punishment, it falls to the competent authorities. If a father intentionally kills his son, he is not subject to retribution (qisas) according to the more preponderant opinion, but he is required to pay a severe blood money (diyyah mughallazah). There is a difference of opinion regarding expiation (kaffarah); some say it is obligatory, while others say it is recommended.
